OFFSHORE ADVENTURE SAILING & EXTENDED CRUISING We are gearing our around the world voyage to the adventure traveler, so you have the opportunity to sail on a true world class yacht at an adventure travel price that includes all room and board expenses. Participating crew will be responsible for expenses ashore, visa and tourist taxes, and must have an onward ticket or equivalent funds from the last port of call. Click for Crew Duty Details Dream Time's adventure sails are geared towards people who want to participate in the sailing, and experience life on a true world class sailing yacht in some of the most remote and exotic ports in the world. With our sights on another circumnavigation we intend to take some passage making crew who are interested in offshore sail training. As the last port slips over the horizon and we glide silently into the unknown, a sense of adventure and wonder awaits. Everyone busily going about their jobs, settling into the rhythm of life on the sea, and developing a common bond that only people who have shared something extraordinary know. As part of Dream Time's crew, you will participate in all aspects of sailing, including sail handling, watch-keeping, helming, routine maintenance, cooking, and cleaning. Each person participates in all parts of life aboard. Sail instruction will include all aspects of sailing including items such as reading charts, basic navigation, radio and radar operation. While some experience is useful, we will train as we go giving each crew member a chance to learn or improve their skills. A positive attitude and spirit of adventure are key to being a successful crew member. So what is life like offshore on a long passage? Each voyage brings a range of emotions - the peace only sailing can bring, the wonder of vastness of the ocean, the comradery of being part of an adventure, emotions from joy to sheer determination, and even occasionally misery. Most trips will have some perfect weather, some periods of no weather and some bad weather. The perfect weather is fabulous and everything you have dreamed about sailing - the sails fill, the yacht heels slightly and surges forward across the waves, the rush of water as the boat drives steadily through the ocean - the feel of the power of the wind as the boat drives forward - dolphins racing along the yacht and doing somersaults or zipping across the bow. You can walk the deck feeling the wind rushing through the sails or sit high above the waves on the pulpit as the boat drives steadily onward hour after hour. A heavy fishing hand line over the back awaiting a tuna or mahi-mahi for our dinner or even breakfast. At night the silent rush of the waves, brilliant stars and occasionally the glow of phosphorous glittering in our wake. Silence and peace fill the night as the rest of the crew sleeps. The light air days can be filled with hours of slapping sails or the whine of an engine, but they also offer the occasional mid-ocean swim or dragging along behind the boat on a heavy line and harness surfing from side to side. Activities like lying on the deck sun bathing, relaxing, reading a book, looking at the brilliant night sky, playing cards, playing board games, discussing the mystery of life, and having a sunset cocktail - these are all ways to pass your days at sea. The days glide by without notice as we relentlessly inch our way across the ocean while the next landfall awaits our arrival. The bad weather inevitably will catch us at some point on a long passage, but this is also an important part of sailing. The ship's routine changes - we double the watch, wear our foul weather gear and harnesses on deck. At times it can be filled with seemingly endless drills of reefing and unfurling the sails for the countless squalls marching across the sea or tacking to avoid a thunder storm crossing our path or surfing down heavy seas. Life aboard is filled with things like searching for a comfortable position to sleep in. Everything becomes more difficult from simply crossing the salon, to taking your turn in the galley and wondering when the weather will settle and return to that perfect sail on the open ocean. It is the midnight scramble on deck to reef sails and the feel of the rain squalls rushing over the boat that will give you the ultimate sense of satisfaction having faced the elements on the open ocean and having persevered to the next port of call. A common bond with your fellow sailors that stretches back through time to the days of old. It is all of these things that will make you long for the sea. Back To Top Offshore Adventure Leg 2 - April 21st to May 19th Offshore Adventure Leg 2 - April 21st to May 19th Roatan, Honduras transit Panama Canal to Balboa, Panama 1200 miles, 21 days, $1,650 US From Honduras it is an offshore passage to the Panama Canal. We will spend approximately a week cruising the beautiful Bay of Islands and day sailing to orient the crew before departing from the Island of Roatan on 6 to 7 day sail to Colon, Panama. In Panama we will offer the opportunity to transit the canal and anchor in Lake Gatun. The Canal is one of the wonders of the modern world and is a once in a life time experience. The canal is 50 miles long and consists of a series of locks each 110 feet wide and 1,000 feet long. In the middle lies Lake Gatun, one of the largest man made lakes in the world. Departing from Balboa the South Pacific is at our feet. Note: This passage can be shortened to two weeks or at a discount combined with the trip to French Polynesia. We set sail from Balboa, Panama on a 924 mile, 8 day run to Darwin's famous Galapagos Islands. On the 8th of June we set off on our longest run, 1,987 miles and 12 days of reaching, to the mysterious monoliths of Easter Island. After a week of hiking and site seeing, we set sail for the 1,136 mile, 7 day downwind run to the historic remote Pitcairn Island, the final resting-place of the Bounty mutineers. From Pitcairn, it is north to French Polynesia.. Our final leg is a brisk 6 day broad reach of 998 miles to the rugged Marquesas site of a Survivor mini series and setting of Herman Melville's epic story, Taipei. It is possible to board early as we watch for our weather window and make the often brisk 6 to 7 day run to the beautiful country of New Zealand. We plan to depart the Vava'u group of Tonga with time to cruise the island chain enroute to Tonga Tupu where we will set off and arrive in the Opua, New Zealand. It is possible to extend your stay onboard as we wonder the coast of the North Island.
